This unit introduces strategies and strategic planning in an HRD context. Focusing on HRD, the unit discusses approaches to formulating strategy, the use of strategic planning tools and the significance of contextual factors in influencing strategic options and choices. You will explore the nature of power in organisations and the need to understand issues of power when developing and delivering HRD strategy. In discussing these issues, you will draw on contemporary research and apply these ideas to business scenarios and case studies.

Learning outcomes for Unit 3

By the end of this unit, you will be able to:

  • explain the difference between external and internal context
  • critically evaluate aspects of external context and assess the implications for HRD strategy
  • critically evaluate aspects of internal context, with reference to a particular organisation, and assess the implications for HRD strategy
  • identify sources of information about skills and educational policy, reviewing the impact of policy initiatives (such as apprenticeship schemes) on HRD strategy
  • explain the differences between economic and social perspectives of strategy
  • assess the relevance of different conceptions of power for HRD practitioners
  • apply selected strategic tools to review HRD strategy
  • review contemporary challenges impacting HRD strategy development.
